Promoted by the Brazilian Computing Society (SBC), the Brazilian Symposium in Information and Systems Security (SBSEG) is the main Brazilian academic forum for security discussions and promotes a competition of the best Master and PhD work to promote the development of the security field in the country. Marcus Botacin’s work
was awarded the best master dissertation developed between 2017 and 2018. Named Hardware-Assisted Malware Analysis, the work investigated the limits of software-based approaches for malware analysis (e.g., malware evasion by detecting emulators side-effects), surveyed existing hardware features that might be leveraged for malware analysis (e.g., HVM, SMM, SGX, HPCs), and proposed a Branch-Monitor-based framework to analyze evasive samples with increased stealthiness.
